Still Life
Choreographer Morgan Thorson’s Still Life is a new work of dance comprising three ensembles who will perform endurance-based segments timed to occur at scheduled intervals throughout the night of Spark and during the length of the exhibit Local Time.
The performance plays with making time, which is essential, intrinsic, but largely unspoken in dance, the central theme of the work. Using the “trappings of theater” such as spot lights, a fog machine, and folded soft goods (e.g. curtains) as props, the work uses the notions of action, interval, and duration—all distinguished by time—as the interactive element of the dance to reveal how time itself yields repetition, endurance, and decay.
Thought of as a key aspect of the work of the dancing, keeping time is addressed and explored through this new dance and its newly commissioned score by New York-based composer, Dana Wachs. Still Life will be performed at the Cowles Center and then Performance Space 122 in New York City.
Morgan Thorson investigates movement and the body as a purveyor of culturally, socially and kinesthetically relevant life experience.
